Challenge:

Bowie State University was founded as an institution focused on preparing students for teaching and related careers in the field of education. The University's more recent history reflects a broader academic scope that includes: computer science; information technology; natural and behavioral sciences; mathematics; and education. To meet its increased academic requirements, Bowie State University recently built the Center for Learning Technology (CLT), a state-of-the-art computer science and technology facility. To increase student learning, the University required the latest in presentation technology and wanted the capability to remotely control and monitor the technology.

Solution:

The CLT includes 22 classrooms and two lecture halls. A standardized integrated education platform was designed for each classroom, and is set in a custom-designed wooden desk, the integrated platform includes computer, LCD screen, VCR/DVD combo, document camera on a sliding shelf, connections for laptop computer, matrix switch, amplifier and Crestron touchscreen panel. In addition to the integrated platform, each classroom includes two speakers, a ceiling-mounted projector and an electronic screen. A video monitor is located in the corner of the classroom that can display TV, campus announcements, or act as a backup to the projector during lectures.

The most important consideration in designing the AV systems for the CLT was the requirement for remote control and monitoring. Utilizing the University's data network for these functions and Crestron's e-Control technology, an IP address was assigned to the Crestron frame in each classroom. To effectively implement e-Control, a dedicated server for AV control was installed in the Media Operations Center across the campus from the CLT. With the successful implementation of e-Control, the help desk in the Media Operations Center is able to control, monitor and diagnose all the AV technology in each classroom and lecture hall.
